The Battle Over Birth Control Coverage Continues

Two religious colleges have sued the federal government over birth control. This stems from a law that requires employers to cover the cost of birth control in their employer sponsored health insurance plans. Many religious groups feel this law forces them to go against their religious beliefs. If you haven’t been following this story, let me catch you up with a little background. Catholic Healthcare West Ends Ties With Catholic Church

Catholic Healthcare West is one of the biggest hospital systems in the United States. It has decided to end its affiliation with the Catholic Church, and to change its name. The change is not going to affect patients, or the medical care provided at these hospitals. When I first heard about this change, I immediately thought about the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, and their battle against a particular health reform law. Catholic Bishops Might Sue Over Health Insurance Law

Recently, the federal government required religious hospitals, universities, and social service agencies, to cover the cost of birth control in their employer sponsored health insurance plans. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has said that they will sue the federal government over this rule. This particular insurance related issue has been going back and forth for quite some time now. In August of 2011, birth control, (as well as several other types of women’s health care), was officially included as a form of preventative care.
